This defeat for Manchester City before the World Cup break is a surprise and could cause a lot of pain during the season. On the other hand, “Liverpool” wins convincingly, “Tottenham” shows tough qualities.
English champion “Manchester City” suffered a surprise defeat in the Premier League after three consecutive victories. Former Dortmund striker Erling Holland’s team lost 2-1 (1-1) at home to London powerhouse Brentford on Saturday thanks to two goals from Ivan Toni. Liverpool FC beat Southampton 3-1 (3-1) in the last match before the World Cup break, which parted ways with coach Ralf Hasenhütl earlier in the week.
“City” loses in extra time. Arsenal win thanks to Odegaard
Toney scored the winner for Brentford, with German pro Vitali Janelt starting, in the eighth minute of added time after putting the visitors ahead for the first time in the 16th minute. England specialist Phil Foden (45 + 1), who was called up to the World Cup squad by national coach Gareth Southgate on Friday, equalized for Cityzens star manager Pep Guardiola.
“Manchester City”, the rival of “RB Leipzig” in the 1/8 finals of the Champions League, remained in second place in the Premier League standings despite the home defeat. Leaders Arsenal seized the opportunity to extend their lead to five points with a 2-0 (0-0) win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday night. The goals of the guests from London were scored by Norwegian Martin Odegor in the 55th and 75th minutes.
Liverpool are sovereign even without Klopp
“Liverpool” rose to the sixth place in the table after a convincing home victory. Former Hoffenheimer Roberto Firmino (6th) headed in a free-kick and Darwin Nunez (21st/42nd) scored twice for the top-flight Reds. Coach Jurgen Klopp had to watch the game from the stands after his red card he received against Manchester City a few weeks ago. Che Adams (9) scored a makeshift equalizer for relegation-threatened Saints with new manager Nathan Jones on the sidelines.
Tottenham and Leeds United put on a great goal-fest with Tottenham finishing better. Spurs fell behind three times 4:3 (1:2) in front of their home crowd. Harry Kane (25′) and Ben Davies (51′) twice equalized before Rodrigo Bentancourt (81’/83′) turned the game around in London.
Chrisencio Summerville (10′) and Rodrigo (43’/76′) scored twice for Leeds. Former RB Leipzig coach Jesse Marsh’s side will have to play the final minutes after receiving a yellow-red card for Tyler Adams (87th).
Chelsea’s crisis continues
Chelsea were unable to end the crisis with German World Cup driver Kai Havertz before the break. The 0-1 (0-0) draw at Newcastle United was the third straight Premier League defeat for the Londoners and the fifth game in a row without a win.
With his goal, Joe Willock (67th) ensured that Newcastle remained 3rd in the table until at least Christmas and that Graham Potter, as Thomas Tuchel’s successor, will have to worry about his job as Chelsea manager.
