Lionel Messi (PSG), Ruben Neves (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Edson Alvarez (Ajax Amsterdam), Bernardo Silva (Man City), Inigo Martinez (Athletic Bilbao) and Ilkay Gundogan (Man City) – the list of candidates that the Spanish giants should represent Barcelona . winter change is getting longer and longer on the wish list.
Spanish and Barca-affiliated sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo is currently reporting that national player and World Cup driver Gundogan has attracted interest from the Catalans. With ManCity unwilling to let go of Silva, the Catalans will have to reckon with better chances with the DFB star. His contract expires after the season.
And what about the Spanish transfer programs? In an interview with “Sport”, the president of “Barca” Joan Laporta (60) gave an idea about the financial situation of the club, and it does not look rosy at all…
“In order to be able to bring in new players in the winter, we have to involve our own players,” explained Laporta. In simple terms, this means that Barca must first get rid of players before bringing in new ones.
“We cannot improve our composition, especially considering that we continue to have problems with financial fair play. Since we were left out of the Champions League, our incomes have decreased dramatically, so we have less opportunity for newcomers,” continued the head of the club.
Even before the season, Barca had huge problems signing up newcomers like Robert Lewandowski (who arrived from Bayern Munich for €45 million) to play in the Spanish league. “Barca” is heavily in debt, so it has to meet many demands of the championship. One of them is the observance of salary thresholds.
In order to be able to sign up the newcomers, the club sold shares in the TV rights and Barça studios (which produce content for the club’s TV channels). By doing so, Barça was able to earn more than 500 million euros.
Laporta now wants to make representations to the league association again so he can sign new players. “We will try to negotiate with La Liga so that they change their mind. We also want to generate new revenues by winning the Europa League and the Spanish Super Cup. Even with friendlies during the World Cup.”
But Laporta is ruling out one thing: an IPO for the club. “The stock company will not be with me as chairman,” he said. “The reason I am the president of this club is that I prevent a joint stock company and Barca will always remain the property of its members.”
What is Nagelsmann doing HERE in the catacombs?
In order to get money in the short term, Memphis Depay (28) should be sold in the winter, reports “Sport”. In the best-case scenario, the Dutch international should be in the spotlight of another club during the World Cup in Qatar (November 20 to December 18). No other players are said to be for sale yet.
At the moment, Barca can only dream of big names like Messi, Silva or Gundogan…
